1. Definition of AAA

Abdominal aortic aneurysm imaged using CT angiogram

Most commonly, an aneurysm is defined as a permanent localised dilatation of an artery, but the amount of enlargement required for an artery to be categorised as aneurysmal is controversial. The definition which is most widely accepted is that agreed by the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) and the North American Chapter of the International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery (ISCVS), who proposed to define arterial aneurysm as ‘a permanent localised dilatation of an artery of more than 50% of the normal diameter of the artery’ in question.
