Most common complaints are:
- Cosmetic appearance: varicose veins can look bad and are disfiguring
- Discomfort in the leg: localised to the site of varicose veins. Specific symptoms include aching, tension, heaviness and itching, particularly after standing for prolonged periods or in hot weather
- General discomfort in the leg: patients can attribute generalised aches and pains in the leg to the presence of VVs
- Nocturnal cramps: are common symptom of varicose veins in the elderly and can be relieved after treatment
