5. Questions to ask when taking history

1. What symptoms does the patient experience?
2. Do they have any of the complications of varicose veins such as haemorrhage, thrombophlebitis, swelling, skin discolouration, eczema etc.?
3. What are the patient’s concerns about their varicose veins (30% only want reassurance)?
4. Is there any history of leg fracture/orthopaedic surgery or deep vein thrombosis?
5. Have they had any treatment for varicose veins before?
6. Are they on the OCP or HRT (increases risk of venous thrombo-embolism after VV surgery)?
